The gentle sway of the hammock on her balcony provided a soothing rhythm for Emily. She inhaled deeply, relishing the scent of the nearby park – the damp earth, the fresh-cut grass. She had a book in her lap, but her eyes were closed, simply basking in the warm afternoon.

The gentle tick of the clock in the living room was the only other sound.

She opened her eyes, and reached for her phone. A message from the building manager. She glanced at the subject line, a flicker of something in her eyes, before setting her phone back down, choosing to look back up into the trees. She’d read it later, perhaps.
